Shopify Appointed Former Alibaba Executive as India Head

According to a recent post by Bharati Balakrishnan on Tuesday, she has been appointed by Shopify, as its India Head. She made this announcement on the professional networking platform, called LinkedIn. Shopify is a Canada-based platform known for helping sellers with e-commerce.

Balakrishnan has experience working with major organizations including Paytm Mall, and Future Group. Along with that, she also worked as an executive at Alibaba India.

In the post, she said that she is about to join Shopify in India. She also expressed her excitement to collaborate with the partners and the developer’s ecosystem of the firm.

She added that the company will be focused on enabling businesses to get their stores available on the internet. Its services will be available to businesses of all sizes. This way they will contribute to improving the commerce experience for everyone.

The appointment of India’s head by Shopify indicates its will to explore growth opportunities in the country. Since the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic last, most large businesses have accelerated their efforts to build an online presence. But still, in the domestic markets of India, the offline mode is preferred by small and medium-sized businesses.

Both big and small businesses in the e-commerce industry can leverage the services offered by Shopify to get an online store for themselves, where they can sell their products on the internet.

According to Shopify, they have observed a positive response toward their services from merchants all around the world. Merchants are adopting this platform, so they can have their stores online.

Shopify is an NYSE-listed firm. Along with that, currently, it posses a market capitalization of $168 billion.

Bharati Balakrishnan has been working in the offline retail and e-commerce industry for the last 15 years. Before getting appointed by Shopify, the last organization he worked for was Future Group, where he played the role of senior vice president-digital commerce.

After Joining Alibaba in 2016, she became the vice president and head of categories at Paytm Mall in 2018.
