Cognizant and Malaria No More India, a non-governmental organization, has launched ‘Malaria Mapathon,’ a geospatial mapping program to improve healthcare access and drive positive outcomes in the fight to end Malaria in India.
Cognizant in the association with Malaria No More India will launch the first phase of the ‘Malaria Mapathon’ initiative in Odisha, where the numbers for Malaria infections are high in India, especially the hotspot districts Koraput and Malkangiri, where over half of all malaria cases in Odisha occur.
Cognizant’s employees will use OpenStreetMap (OSM) to trace, edit and label key infrastructure and geography of the region, including streets, buildings, vegetation, and water bodies.
Malaria No More India will overlay epidemiology and weather data on the geospatial map framework, which these organizations will then optimize to identify disease hotspots and underserved communities, stratify the risk of transmission, improve surveillance and disease reporting, and deliver targeted medical interventions, supplies, and life-saving aids and tools.
Malaria No More envisions a world where not a single person should be died from a mosquito bite and supports India’s drive to eliminate Malaria by 2030 by working with partners to mobilize necessary political will, funding, and innovation.
Rajesh Nambiar, Chairman and MD of Cognizant India, said, “Cognizant team is pleased to pledge its support and bring our technology and domain expertise to the fight against malaria.”
He further said, “The ongoing pandemic has underscored the important role played by technology and data in driving a robust healthcare response. However, no person should be left behind, and vulnerable and at-risk communities need timely help, supplies, and medical intervention. In Odisha, the huge gains made in the fight against Malaria are at risk now, with the pandemic impeding access to critical health services. In partnership with Malaria No More, we are committed to helping Odisha in the battle to eradicate this deadly but preventable disease.”
